“We don’t believe in ‘fixing’ anyone; we refine the operator. By applying real-world technical discipline to the craft of specialty coffee, we provide a high-pressure environment where student identity development happens naturally, students gain the agency to command the machine and the composure to lead themselves.
Instead of managing behaviours, we build emotional intelligence in schools, trading reactive habits for the steady, diagnostic discipline of a mature young adult.“
The Architecture of Authenticity
Finding the Balance Point
“Balanza is the Spanish word for The Scales. I chose it because, in my thirty plus years between aircraft hangars and coffee roasters, I’ve learned that everything, machines, coffee, and people, eventually has to find its balance point.
Here’s what I mean.
I grew up as one of ‘those’ kids, the ones who always felt a little out of sync with the world. Back then, I assumed that as I got older, the roadblocks I struggled with would eventually sort themselves out. I thought time would do the work for me. The opposite was the case. As the pressures of adulthood arrived, my emotional hurdles only became higher.
Whether we admit it or not, this is the reality for all of us in one form or another. If those internal “hurdles” aren’t addressed, we find other ways to cope. Without a clear sense of identity, unaddressed pain leads to ‘self-medication’ 100% of the time. I built this lab because I realised that building resilience in students starts with building identity first. The best way to master the machine is to first master the operator. Balanza is the place where we stop trying to outrun our hurdles and start the youth emotional development required to clear them.”
